Sushil Kumar, an Indian Olympic star, has been charged with murder.
Police discovered five vehicles parked outside the Chhatrasal stadium, as well as a shotgun and three ammunition in the backseat of an SUV, when they arrived. They also discovered dry blood on a pile of bamboo sticks in the parking area.
According to authorities, there was a brawl at the stadium involving 18 to 20 persons. Three persons were hurt and were brought to the hospital. Sagar Dhankar, a 23-year-old wrestler, died of his wounds hours later.
Sushil Kumar, one of India's most accomplished athletes, was among the brawlers, according to authorities. The 37-year-old wrestler is India's only two-time Olympic medalist in an individual event and the country's lone world champion in wrestling. This is a remarkable achievement for a country that has only won two individual Olympic medals in the previous century.
Kumar also works for the Delhi government's sports department and lives in a housing complex adjacent to the stadium, where he began training as a 14-year-old under the tutelage of his former coach, and now father-in-law, Satpal Singh.
Kumar was sought by the police for three weeks. They carried out raids and offered a reward of 100,000 rupees (£950) for any information leading to the capture of the wrestler. Kumar was apprehended near a Delhi metro station on May 23.
In connection with the stadium brawl, he now faces allegations of murder, kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy. The police claim they're seeking for nighttime CCTV footage. The media has been flooded with rumors that the incident was sparked by a property dispute in which the wrestler was engaged, as well as purported gangster-wrestler ties.
Kumar's lawyer, Pradeep Rana, told me that Kumar disputes the claims. "There was a battle between two sets of wrestlers. They had fled by the time Kumar got at the scene of the fight ""Rana explained." "There are no eyewitnesses to the incident. Behind the scenes, some influential people are working to accuse my client and settle old grudges."
